Price Your Deck
Answer five quick questions. Your price range updates as you go.
1Your deck’s layout
Shape, size, height and stairs. The drawing changes as you go.
Length runs along the house. Width is how far the deck reaches into the yard.
ground level
2What’s there now?
3Which decking?
We install all of these. Lines with the same number of $ cost about the same.
4Railing
We measured the sides that face the yard, minus the stair openings. Change it if a wall or fence already covers a side.

How We Price a Deck
The same way we build a real quote: one part at a time.
Local prices, not national averages
National cost guides mix in cheaper parts of the country. These prices aim to stay close to what decks cost here in Orange County, so they’re in the ballpark of what you’ll actually pay.
Bigger decks cost less per square foot
Every deck needs the same setup, edge boards and cleanup. On a big deck that cost is spread over more space, so a 400 sq ft deck usually costs less per foot than a 120 sq ft one.
What moves the price most
Height and railing. A raised deck needs footings, posts and beams, and anything over 30 in needs a guard rail. The board line you pick matters less than most people expect.
Deck Cost Questions
Why do you show a range and not one price?
This calculator gives an estimate for planning only, not a quote. Two decks the same size can differ by thousands because of things a calculator can’t see: soil, slope, how we get materials to your backyard, and what your city requires. We can’t confirm a price until we see your site, and your exact price is set after a free site walkthrough. Read our full deck cost guide →
Why is this higher than decking brand calculators?
Brand calculators price the boards and railing only. This calculator gives the full installed price: framing, footings, decking, railing, stairs, labor and cleanup. Materials are usually about a third of a finished deck. Pro install vs. DIY costs →
Do I need a permit for my deck?
Usually yes if the deck is attached to the house, more than 30 inches off the ground, or over 200 sq ft. We handle the drawings and the paperwork with your city. Permit fees depend on the city and are not in the calculator. What permits a California deck needs →
My home is in a wildfire zone. Does that change the price?
You’ll need a decking line approved for wildfire zones (marked WUI above), and some cities ask for extra fire-safe details. Several lines from each brand qualify, many at the same price. We confirm the rules for your address before anything is ordered. Read our composite decking guide →
Is composite worth the extra cost over wood?
For most homes, yes. Composite costs more on day one but needs no sanding or sealing, and lasts 25 to 30 years. Wood needs a fresh stain or seal every couple of years, which adds up. Composite vs. wood, pros and cons → Compare deck woods →
